CEA

CEA, or carcinoembryonic antigen, is a protein measured in the blood and used as a general tumour marker. The test checks whether the level is higher than normally expected.

A raised CEA can be linked to several conditions, including some non-cancerous ones such as smoking, so it cannot confirm a diagnosis by itself. It is most useful for monitoring a known condition over time and is always interpreted alongside other tests and clinical findings.
