AFP

AFP, or alpha-fetoprotein, is a protein measured in the blood and used as a tumour marker. It is normally produced in small amounts in adults, so the test looks at whether levels are higher than expected.

A raised AFP can help detect and monitor certain liver conditions and some other tumours. On its own it cannot confirm a diagnosis, so an abnormal result is always interpreted alongside imaging and other tests.
