Laboratory Tests

ALT (SGPT)

ALT, also known as SGPT, is an enzyme found mostly inside liver cells. This blood test measures how much ALT has leaked into the bloodstream, which can signal that liver cells are under strain.

A raised ALT may indicate liver inflammation or damage from a range of causes, including fatty liver, infections or certain medicines. Mild changes are common and often harmless, so the result is interpreted together with other liver tests rather than used to diagnose on its own.

This explanation is for general information and is not medical advice. Your results are always interpreted by a doctor.
