Laboratory Tests
Potassium
Potassium is an electrolyte measured in the blood that is essential for the proper working of your muscles, nerves and especially the heart. This test reports the level present in your bloodstream.
Because potassium has such an important role in heart rhythm, levels that are too high or too low can be significant and may relate to kidney function, hydration or certain medicines. The result is usually interpreted alongside other electrolytes and kidney tests.
This explanation is for general information and is not medical advice. Your results are always interpreted by a doctor.
